Why are the Nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? Psalm 2:1-12
Without dating myself, I think we all can agree that there was a time when the daily newspaper was thrown in your front yard. You looked through it, read some of it, perhaps even tried your, hand and mind at a crossword puzzle, then turned the page to the comic strips with Lone Ranger, Blondie, Hop along Cassidy,. Later Charlie Brown and Lucy!
The point is that News then was simple, you had a bit of local news, and a little weather! Along with some honorable mentioned. Nothing troubling. Certainly nothing to go to bed with. Nope, it was just Simply to the point, news. Our parents didn’t think any more about it, until the next morning, when you got brand new news! Nothing that made one feel out of touch or concerned about. yep! the world was much simpler then or at least it seemed to be. Now, we live from one breaking news to the next, and many can’t seem to get enough, or away from it. We lose perspective because too many stories fill too many hours on too many platforms. Personal disputes, as far as Buckingham Palace and the Royal family are now being reported. And lets not forget the needless bombing on Ukraine to China’s balloon being shot down… and the tiring things taking place on Capital Hill.
Late breaking developments are reported, repeated, analyzed, and argued. Stories are investigated, fact checked, manipulated, and sometimes fabricated. I don’t know about you, but I just can’t keep up with it all. Most of what we hear causes one to become anxious, angry, upset, depressed, or cynical. Chiming noise on our cell phones keep us notified and up to date every time a politician creates a scandal, a shooter fires a gun, killing innocent children and people; court issues a ruling, to a celebrity causing an uproar. Oh my goodness gracious, I’m so over it! Jesus when are you coming back! Life as it is can’t be healthy…
Let’s draw our attention to Psalm 2:1-12,Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? Psalm 2:2, The kings of the earth prepare for battle ; the rulers plot together against the LORD and against His Anointed One. v3, “Let us break their chains,” they cry, and free ourselves from slavery to God. Psalm 2:4, But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. v5, Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury.
How do we handle all of it?.. the Bible says our thoughts should linger on what is true, noble, just , pure, lovely, and of good report (Philippians 4:8), I’m not suggesting we ignore the news or live in ignorance about the world around us, but we must never let the “Breaking News,” twist our minds, nor shall we allow it to transform it, (Romans 12:2). No, we can’t ignore the news nor live in ignorance about the the world in which we live in. How should the children of God manage the news of the day? How can we live in a world of breaking news yet maintain Spirit -infused cheerfulness, hopefulness, and serenity? Can we be wise with our time without becoming warped by the wickedness of it all? May I remind you that God isn’t obsessed with headlines or surprised at the events of the day. Though He’s aware of every word on the lips of newscasters, He never gasps in surprise. He knows what’s happening behind every closed door, in every governmental agency, and in the hearts of every head of state.
God is all-powerful. He created the world and knew about the empires of the earth long before they came into being. (Daniel 2:26-45), It is pride and power that cause nations and leaders to rebel against God and try to break free of him. Many world leaders boast of their power, rant and rave against God and his people, and promise to take over and form their empires. But God laughs because any power they have comes from him, and he can also take it from them. We need not fear the boat of tyrants…they are in God’s hands and will be judged by him.
(Psalm 2),asks, “why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans?…The one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them” ( Psalm 2:1-4,) NLT The Psalm ends by advising leaders to act wisely and serve the Lord with reverent fear or they will be destroyed in the midst of all their activities. The final verse says, “but what joy for all who take refuge in him” (Psalm 2:12,)
So, how should we live in light of what we know to be true about the God we love and serve? We must surrender fully and submit to the Son. Christ is not only God’s chosen King, He is also the rightful King of our hearts and lives. We are to be ready for Christ’s return, we must submit to his leadership every day of our lives. And view His Word as Truth.. It is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. (Psalm 119: 105)
