Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6-7
Think of all the ways we are told to relate to “truth” in our world today. Study the truth, find the truth, tell the truth, explore the truth, discover the truth, reveal the truth- and the list goes on. But before we can put any of those verbs into action, we must answer the question raised by Pontius Pilate when he asked Jesus of Nazareth, “What is truth?” (John 18:38). We can only study and learn that which we can identify.
Had Pilate known Jesus better, he would have known that Jesus had already answered that question when He said, “I am…the truth.” Thinking about that statement with Paul’s description of truth as one of the elements of the Christian’s spiritual armor brings us to this conclusion: Jesus Christ is the believer’s spiritual armor. Paul says in (Romans 13:14),that we are to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” When we put on (believe in, submit to) Christ, who is truth, we clothe ourselves with truth; we protect ourselves from satan’s lies and deception.
If you are clothed with Christ and His Word today, you are clothed in truth, defended against the deception of Satan.
This passage of scripture is one of the most basic and important passages in Scripture. How can we know the way of God? Only through Jesus. Jesus is the way because he is both God and man. When we unite our lives with his, we are united with God. Trust Jesus to take you to the Father, and all the benefits of being God’s child will be yours. ( John 14:5-6).
Jesus says He is the only way to God the Father. Some people may argue that this way is too narrow. In reality, it is wide enough for the whole world, if the world chooses to accept it. Let’s not overthink this. Instead of worrying about how limited it sounds to have “Only one way,” we should be saying, “Thank you, God for providing a sure way to get to you!”
As the way, Jesus is our path to the Father. As the truth, He is the reality of all God’s promises. As the life, He joins His Divine life to ours, both now and eternally.
