O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hands. Isaiah 64:8
As my eyes gazed at today’s verse from Isaiah 64:8, I was amazed at the number of times “Potter and Clay were found in Scripture. As you reflect on Scripture, one comes to realize Indeed God is the Master Potter, and humanity is the clay.
We come to understand that God is Sovereign over all creation; and we should desire to yield to His divine purpose and plan for our lives. This thought should encourage us to discover and live out the purpose for which we have been created.
When God created humanity He did so with You and I in mind. We are Unique. There is only one of You. God created us in the image of His Son, and we are all different. We are Loved ,Valued and Treasured. God Created us with a purpose, He created us to be useful. And when you stop and ponder on this truth, we come to realize that God’s Hands brings wholeness and hope to our broken dreams.
Understanding this, should be no surprise that the image of a potter and clay shows up frequently in Scripture. It starts in Genesis. Genesis 2:7, When God physically shaped Adam from the clay of the earth and breathed life into him. We are all human, a word akin to the Latin word humus, meaning “earth or “clay”. We see in 2Corinthians 4:7, where the apostle Paul , referred to our bodies as “Jars of Clay.” insert
Scripture: Here Paul makes a distinction regarding what type of jar he’s referring to. It’s a jar of earth or earthenware. The only other place in the New Testament where the same two Greek words are found together is in 2 Timothy 2:20. Jars and vessels are commonly spoken of in the New Testament. Only in 2 Timothy, is where Paul mentions earthenware jar…a jar of clay.
To say that we are clay in the hands of the Potter is to acknowledge God’s Perfect handiwork as the Master Potter and Creator of our physical bodies. The apostle Paul tells us, God wants to form us into “a Vessel of Honor, Sanctified and Useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.”
(2 Timothy 2:21). This helps us to view our lives through the lenses of a loving Father who orchestrates all events in our lives as a Potter shaping our life’s with purpose, to grow us and shape us as a potter shaping clay, for His good purpose.
If you are in Christ Jesus Today, be encouraged that God will work to remove those hard lumps so He can form you into vessels that are useful and pleasing to Him. Our responsibility is to surrender to any changes from the Master Potter.
It is never the clay who decides what it will be or is able to turn itself into a masterpiece. The potter is the one who kneads, forms, and shapes the clay into a vessel.
Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6.
