The Greatness Of God

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

                                                                  Psalm 19:1-14

The above picture is what I woke up to, as I stood on my balcony at Laguna Beach in the early mornings, Immediately, with Bible in hand, I began to reflect upon    Psalm 19

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.  Day to day pours out speech and night to night reveals knowledge.  There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.  Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.  In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and like a strong man, runs it course with joy.

Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.  The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.  More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.  Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there’s great reward.  Who can discern his errors?  Declare me innocent from hidden faults.  Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sin; let them not have dominion over me!  Then I shall be blameless, and innocent great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer,

In this Psalm David meditates on God’s creation, God’s Word, his own sinfulness, and God’s forgiveness.  In (Psalm 19:3-4); The apostle Paul referred to this psalm when he explained that everyone knows about God because nature proclaims God’s existence and power (Romans 1:19-,20). This does not cancel the need for missions because the message of God’s Salvation found in His Word, the Bible, must still be told to the ends of the earth.  While nature points to the existence of God, the Bible tells us about God’s plan for salvation.  We have a responsibility to go out and share the good news of Jesus.. Though many may believe in a Creator because of the evidence of nature around them, they need to know about His love, mercy, and grace.  So, what are you doing to take God’s message to the world? As God reveals Himself through nature (Psalm 19:1-6), we learn about His power and our finiteness. We are surrounded by fantastic displays of God’s craftsmanship.., the heavens give dramatic evidence of His existence, His power, His love, and His care.  To say that the universe happened by chance is ridiculous.  Its design, intricacy, and orderliness point to a personally involved Creator.  As you look at God’s handiwork in nature and the heavens, thank Him for such magnificent beauty and the truth it reveals about who God is as Creator. As God reveals himself through Scripture (Psalm 19:7-11), we learn about his holiness and our sinfulness.  As God reveals Himself through daily experience. God’s Word revives us, makes us wise, brings joy to the heart, gives insight, warns us and rewards us.  God’s laws are guidelines (a lamp to our feet and a light to our path).

(Psalm 19:12-14), David’s rhetorical question expresses that without God’s Word, it is difficult for people to know if or when they violate God’s will. The Word brings hidden faults to light and brings a sense of conviction.  In (Psalm 19:14), may these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.  Speaks of the God who made the universe by His almighty power offering to exercise that same power on our behalf to help us speak and think in a way that honors Him.  He wants to be involved in every aspect of our lives.

Would you change the way you live if you knew that every word and thought would be examined by God first?  David asks that God would approve his words and reflections as though they were offerings brought to the altar.  As you begin each day, determine that God’s love will guide what you say and how you think.
