“Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh the joys of those that take refuge in him!” Psalm 34
I love this Psalm. The beginning starts with I will Bless The Lord At All Times; His Praise Shall continually be in my mouth. I find this verse sometimes easier to read than it is to practice. How can we praise the Lord at all times? Sometimes it’s difficult. Sometimes we are weak and our bodies hurt or circumstances are difficult. Sometimes we must helplessly watch people we love go through hard times. But then we move to the second part of this Psalm. We can Thank God because He Saves, Keeps, and Satisfies (v 6-8). Psalm 34: 8; Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. “Taste and see” does not mean, we check out God’s credentials. Instead, it is a beautiful invitation to “try and experience.” David invites God’s children to indulge in the goodness of the Lord by personally experiencing His goodness for themselves. When we take that first step of obedience in following God, we will discover that He is good and kind. As new believers, our knowledge of God is limited and incomplete. But as we begin to trust Him daily, we experience just how good He is. Do you know what makes the bitter cup satisfying and sweet? It’s tasting the Lord in it. When you taste the Lord in the experiences of life, they become sweet in Him. Remember, God knows what we need, and our deepest needs are spiritual. Even though many Christians face unbearable circumstances and hardships, of every kind, they still have enough spiritual nourishment to live for God. David is saying that if we have God we have all that we really need. God is enough. If today you are feeling downcast and don’t feel as though you have everything that you need. It may be that God may just allow you to go without to help you grow more dependent on him. He may want you to learn that you need him more than having your immediate desires met.
